Rain chains guide the flow of water gently to the ground and are a wonderful alternative to downspouts They have been used in Japan for hundreds of years. Years ago, people used rain chains to guide the water into large barrels to catch the water from the roof for household purposes and gardening. Rain chains also sound great and add the essential element of feng shui to the home. The Japanese often put a ceramic or stoneware pot beneath the chain, filled with water, so that when it rains, the water drips from the chain into the pot, creating a beautiful display. You can make a square out of redwood beneath the chains and fill it with small pebbles. If it is damp regularly, moss will grow between the pebbles. You can also place a single paver tile or a few medium size stones under the chain to break the fall of the water. Your local nursery may have a large, low bowl or saucer that will make a good catch basin. Standard length is 8 1/2 feet and you can order custom lengths. |
